Designed for the small locos and mining cars on the KitWood Hill Mining Company layout this highly versatile turntable comes with all the operational and functional trimmings. Whilst more common in UK applications, this cross-road turntable can bring much operational value to small On30 and 0-16.5 layouts.
With a diameter of 70mm (2¾”) it will accomodate nearly all 4 wheel cars/wagons, and just large enough to turn either short 16’ bogie cars or an 0-4-2 Porter with a little room to spare. The 16.5mm guage turntable can be used for 0n30, 0-16.5, OO, HO or Gn15.
The turntable comes complete with a pre-assembled motor + planetary gearbox and additional nylon reduction gearing for smooth, slow and realistic operation. The high-torque motor only requires 1.5V so can be run from a single AA battery (battery holder included), or from DC voltage stepped down from the layout supply. It’s very quiet. As supplied, indexing is set-up for 90degree rotation. It is a simple method that works!
Operationally the turntable has phosphor-bronze pickups for reliable power-routing of the rails and motor control indexing. In 4-rail wagon turntable format it is wired like an electrofrog diamond crossing to prevent stalling with 4 wheel locos. The turntable is compatible with DCC or DC use.
The detailed illustrated instructions take you through each step of the assembly, and include full wiring instructions and schematics. The basic kit does not include printed instructions, rather they come as an extra cost if you wish printed copies to be included to the kit. Note this may affect shipping cost. See the home page for reasons why we do this (from the "About us" drop down menu). Please download the instructions by clicking on the image (no obligation to purchase), so you can see more of the kit detail. (note this is a shrunk image to reduce bandwidth - if you purchase you will be mailed a better quality pdf)
Code 70, Code 83 or Code 100 rail options are available, the decking height matching the rail by means of varying spacer thicknesses. For a finer look we recommend code 83 and this is the default choice with the kit – it is compatible with most RTR stock, and will work with commonly-used Peco and ME NG track.
Rail jigs are included for preparing and soldering the rail accurately into place on the custom PCB. If you are familiar with soldering then you should not find this difficult, even if you have never soldered rail before. Yes, really! Please download the rail-PCB assembly instructions to see how its done. But as an option we can do the rail soldering for you at an extra cost. Note you will still have to solder the wiring in place to connect the turntable to the rest of the layout. PLEASE NOTE: if you select the presoldered version, it will take one extra UK working day to complete your order.
Back-up offer: if you have already bought a "DIY soldered" kit and disaster strikes with the soldering, then please contact us by email and we'll send you a soldered assembly for £16. (post free in the UK)
The deck surface is laser-cut Obechi sheet representing approximately 9 inch timbers.
The turntable body components are laser-cut ply of appropriate thicknesses, and where appropriate, laser-cut double-sided permanent adhesive tape is used to assist in the assembly. Sub-assemblies are screwed together to ensure future access to the various operational elements.
The base requires a square hole of 85x85mm in the baseboard – no need for cutting round holes!
Simple, effective, reliable, versatile and affordable.
